At the beginning of this Chapter, Nick gets invited to Gatsby's house for the first time, he describes the parties Gatsby has in great detail, from the food to the decorations to the men. Gatsby's party brings 1920's glamour and wealth to light, the extravagant decorations and the amount of people at the party goes to show how everyone wants to be a part of the upper class, side by side with Jay Gatsby. The party includes both the rich from West and East Egg, the blend of each creates a distinct American mood. The reader has seen Gatsby from a distance, hearing characters talk about him, and listening to Nick's thoughts about him, but has not actually met him at this point. Chapter 3 is devoted to the introduction of Gatsby and the lavish world he inhabits. Fitzgerald gives Gatsby a "grand" entrance to both Nick and the reader. Despite this introduction, the chapter continues to remain mysterious, and has Gatsby keep his "low profile."
