The beginning of the chapter starts with Nick not being able to sleep. It is similar to the problems that the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, wrote about in "The Crack-Up", but in The Great Gatsby it used more noticeably as possibly a foreshadowing of Gatsby's death.
Gatsby essentially gave up his life for Daisy when he said he was driving the car that killed Myrtle, but was it all for love? The story of how Gatsby met Daisy mentioned "many men had already loved Daisy- it increased her value in his eyes. He felt their presence all about the house, pervading the air with the shades and echoes of still vibrant emotions." So is it all a game to Gatsby, and was he still trying to win Daisy back? Gatsby was ambitious to become both wealthy and successful, and there is a possibility that Daisy or a future with a woman was part of his dreams for himself.
When Nick leaves for the city, he makes it quite clear about how much he misses Gatsby, but when Jordan calls, he doesn't even care enough to want to talk to. They hang up and a few minutes later Nick tries calling Gatsby. There is another possibility that Nick does not care about having a relationship of any kind with Jordan.
